Intro to Handbuilding

This class is an introduction to hand-building ceramics. Unlike wheel throwing, hand-building provides the freedom to make anything. This class will give you a chance to learn how to use different methods, such as coil building, slabs, stretching, and pinching.

Everything but clay is provided. You will need to purchase clay from Tally Clay Supply before the first class. B-Mix  or any other white Cone 5/6 stoneware is preferred. All tools will be provided, but you can always bring your favorites. 

Each class will need to be scheduled individually:

Class 1: Intro to hand-building and pinch pots

Class 2: Building with slabs, you will learn how to manipulate and create pieces with rolled clay slabs.

Class 3: Working with coils and stretching/manipulating clay.

Class 4: Completing our pieces and adding any details or surface decorations. We will go over smoothing pieces and cleaning them up. Also, we will talk about how to dry hand-built pieces to ensure they survive the kiln firing. 

Class 5: Glazing, we review how glazes are used and layered. Surface decorations can also be added after the first firing and before glazing. What different items you can use to add decorations (glaze, underglaze, pencils, chalk, decals, etc.)

Each class is $85 and will last 2 hours. You can schedule each class individually. Timings are flexible, so please email us or comment at checkout with a time change request.
There should be at least a 3-week gap between Class 4 and Class 5 for drying and firing the pieces.
